Papers, 1830-1990, bulk 1943-1944.

This collection contains World War II letters of U.S. Army Lieutenant Kenneth G. Maddox to his family. Also present are genealogical materials relating to the Maddox and Edmonson families. The bulk consists of Maddox's letters to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Maddox of Louisville, Kentucky, and his brother and sister-in- law, Hunt and Doris Edmonson Maddox, of Montgomery, Alabama. The letters begin in 1943 when Kenneth was stationed in England. He spoke of sightseeing, army life, and events at home. Maddox's later letters reflect his battle experiences. He described the French countryside, his efforts to communicate in French, and the people he encountered. He also gave information about his participation in the liberation of Paris and other French towns and seeing the punishment issued women accused of fraternization with the Germans. As he moved to Germany, Maddox wrote of his stays in abandoned barns and houses, and area bombing raids. Maddox's last full letter detailed two days' liberty in Paris in early December, 1944. Two postwar letters concerning soldiers who served with Maddox report his last battle. There are papers of a 1985 memorial service and dedication held in Maddox's honor, sponsored by the Boy Scouts.
